Tech giant Amazon is introducing a new feature — Adaptive Volume — that will make Alexa respond louder if it detects a noisy background.

Amazon has rolled out a new feature for Alexa that can make sure you hear what the voice assistant says even while the TV’s on or while people are talking. According to The Verge, the new feature called Adaptive Volume will make Alexa speak louder if it detects a lot of ambient noise. The goal, the company told the publication, is for you to be able to hear the voice assistant’s responses over the noise in your home or office. If you’re outside the US, though, you won’t be able to give it a try just yet — The Verge says it’s only available for US customers at the moment.

Amazon doesn’t mention adaptive volume working in the opposite direction, becoming quieter if there’s no background noise, but there are other ways to reduce the volume dynamically. One of them is Whisper Mode, where Alexa will whisper its response if you talk to it quietly. As this relaxing video points out, you can activate the mode by asking Alexa to “turn on whisper mode.”

Now, if you have a kitchen full of screaming children, or the surround sound turned right upon an action movie, it should still be possible to easily converse with your Echo. It’s also an easy feature to enable, simply say, “Alexa, turn on Adaptive Volume” or toggle it on in the Alexa app.

Other new Alexa features Amazon highlighted in the roundup include the ability to enable more than one custom phrase to trigger Routines, the availability of a Metallica podcast, and Alexa Transit, which simplifies navigation using public transport. It should make it much easier to not only find the nearest train station, but also the status of a specific train (or bus).
