UGC informed the Supreme Court that the Academic Calendar has been finalized according to which admissions will close by October 31 and time for provisional admissions will continue even after that date.

Meanwhile, the University Grants Commission (UGC) also informed the court that the admission process in colleges will be closed by October 31. UGC’s reply came following a plea seeking an extension of admission deadlines due to the delayed compartment exams.

The bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar and Sanjeev Khanna recorded this submission of CBSE and UGC and disposed of the two PILs filed by students Shivam Kumar and Anika Samvedi demanding accommodation of nearly 2 lakh students who otherwise would miss out on college admissions if CBSE delays announcement of results.

The Court had last week directed both CBSE and UGC to work a way out as it observed, “career of 2 lakh students is not a small matter. Their career will be affected for an entire year if CBSE delays result beyond the closing date of admissions for this year.” The SC bench was hearing two PILs filed by one Anika Samvedi and Shivam Kumar. The first petition sought postponement of compartment exams due to the Covid-19 situation. The other plea only requested SC to ensure the career of the students does not suffer due to the late announcement of results by the board.

Referring to the Covid-19 pandemic, the top court had said that these are exceptional times and the authorities should act to help students.

The bench then disposed of the plea filed by one Anika Samvedi seeking a direction to ensure that the academic year of students of 12th class, appearing in compartment exams, shouldn’t go waste.

 coronavirus live updates

While India continues to report the highest number of daily cases in the world, the health ministry said the country is witnessing more cases due to increased testing. In the last 24 hours, nearly 14 lakh tests were conducted in India.

Meanwhile, India’s Covid-19 recovery rate also seems to be improving rapidly as daily recoveries have been higher than the new case for the past few days. India has a recovery rate of over 81 per cent at the moment.

The country also has one of the lowest fatality rates in the world, indicating that the risk the virus poses is gradually declining.

It may be noted that Maharashtra remains the worst affected state in India and is still reporting the highest number of cases. Other states which are reporting high daily infections are Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

The health ministry has said that 75 per cent of the new coronavirus cases in India are concentrated in 10 states and Union territories (UTs). It also said that an equal number of states and UTs are reporting 74 per cent of the new recoveries.
