PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday extended the COVID-19 lockdown to May 3 in India and students are now ready for another long wait before schools have any chance of re-opening. This calls for paying attention to the fitness of students who are stuck at home.

Keeping this in mind, The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Fit India Mission have collaborated to give live classes on basic exercises, nutrition, yoga and meditation, etc. The live sessions will be available on social media websites: YouTube, Facebook and Instagram. The sessions are downloadable and can be made available for anytime, anywhere dissemination at a later point of time as well, said CBSE.

The live classes will commence on April 15 at 9.30 am. The sessions will be held for a period of one month.

Students can access the CBSE LIVE fitness classes on the following channels:

Union Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ tweeted today that he has spoken to Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Kiren Rijiju for a collaboration with CBSE to provide students live sessions by experts covering topics like Basic Exercises, Nutrition, Yoga & Meditation, boosting immunity, etc.

Why do students need fitness classes now?

When youngsters are forced to be at home for such long periods, it can damage their health both physically and mentally. Healthy and active bodies produce active minds.

“As many schools have already initiated online/virtual classes for students, it is equally important to invest in their overall physical, emotional and mental well-being at home during this period,” stated the CBSE notification.

“Research shows that doing exercise influences the release and uptake of feel-good chemicals called endorphins in the brain. Even a short burst of 10 minutes physical activities positively increases mental alertness, energy, and mood,” it said.

Videos can be downloaded for later use

These CBSE fitness class videos will be available to download for later use as well.

All CBSE schools have been asked to circulate the information regarding the fitness classes to all students, parents and teachers.

The CBSE notification stated that the Fit India Mission has also informed that they have made five capsules of five minutes each for break between online sessions.

These capsules can be downloaded from the link and can be played by schools in between online sessions from April 15, 2020.

Schools have also been asked to send in feedback so that richer, and more inspiring content can be worked on.
