In order to maintain a database of workers in the unorganised sector, the government will launch the e-Shram portal tomorrow, August 26. Union Minister for Labour and Employment Bhupender Yadav has launched the logo of the e-Shram portal. The minister said the portal will be launched on August 26 and on the same day, a national toll-free number 14434 will also be launched to assist and address the queries of the workers seeking registration on the portal.

Once the e-shram portal is launched, workers under the unorganised sector will be able to enjoy the benefits of all social security schemes provided by the government. 

The Central government aims to register thirty-eight crore workers of the unorganised sector under this program. Apart from construction workers, this includes migrant workers, street vendors and domestic workers.

Important points for the e-shram portal: 

  • For the first time after Independence, on the principle of Shramev Jayate, e-SHRAM portal, a National Database of Unorganized Workers, will be launched on 26 Aug, 2021 to connect all Unorganized Workers of the Nation with the mainstream,” EPFO said.
  • As part of the initiative, the workers will be issued an e-Shram card containing a 12 digit unique number.
  • The objective behind the move is the integration of social security schemes of the government.
  • The worker can register using his Aadhaar card number and bank account details, apart from filling in other required details like date of birth, mobile number, hometown, and social category.

What is e-SHRAM card?

  • e-SHRAM card will give a new identity to crores of Unorganized Workers of the Nation, Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) said.
  • “The e-SHRAM card will be valid across the country,” EPFO said.

After the launch of the e-shram portal, workers of the unorganized sector can register themselves for it. They will need their Aadhaar card number along with other necessary details like date of birth, hometown, mobile number and social category to register themselves. Once they are registered, they will be issued the e-shram card. The card will consist of twelve-digit numbers and the details of the workers on it. The whole purpose of this portal is to provide social security schemes of the government to people who otherwise cannot benefit from it. It’s like one-card access to everything.
