Tokyo Olympics 2020: Sindhu vs Yamaguchi- PV Sindhu Quarterfinal: PV Sindhu defeated Japanese Akane Yamaguchi in straight games to book her place in the semi-finals of the women’s individual event. The game lasted 4 minutes short of an hour, Sindhu maintained her composure, winning the first game 21-13. She got a tough fight from Yamaguchi in the 2nd game but she kept going and won the game 22-20, thus, winning the match. This marks Sindhu’s 4th consecutive straight games victory in the Tokyo Olympics. She has not lost a single game in the tournament. Sindhu will play her semi-finals match on 31st July against the winner of Ratchanok Intanon vs Tai Tzu Ying clash.
- PV Sindhu beats Akane Yamaguchi 2-0 (21-13, 22-20) to enter the semifinals. Sindhu stormed into the semifinals of the women’s singles event after defeating Japan’s number four seed Akane Yamaguchi in the quarterfinals. Sindhu defeated Yamaguchi 21-13, 22-20. The quarterfinal clash between Sindhu and Yamaguchi lasted for 56 minutes.
- Game 2: 21-20 Yamaguchi snatches the lead from Sindhu and the Indian is trailimg by just a point. This is such a decisive point for the Indian and a close net serve helps her level the game. Yamaguchi still manages at 19-18 and then two-game points. Sindhu with a smash makes it 19-20 and then an excellent smash down the line helps Siindhu makes it 20-20. Sindhu saves two game points and gets the game to deuce. After surviving to game points, Sindhu made her way to a match point at 21-20. Match Sindhu and the Indian enters the semifinal once again! What a game!
Mean-while, The Indian women’s hockey team also registered their first win of the campaign, sealing a 1-0 win vs Ireland.
Also, Avinash Mukund Sable missed out on qualifying for the finals of Men’s 300m Steeplechase. Despite missing out on qualification, he broke the national record, clocking 8:18:12. Sprinter Dutee Chand also missed out on qualification for the 100m semifinals, finishing 45th overall in her heats.
Even boxer Simranjit Kaur faced an early exit, losing against Sudaporn Seesondee in Round of 16 of Women’s Light (57-60kg) event.
The men’s hockey team will be high on confidence when they take on Japan after having beaten defending Olympic champions Argentina yesterday.
