YouTube brings ‘New to you : With the launch of TikTok in 2018, the popularity of the short video format has grown significantly around the world and it reached the major milestone of becoming the most downloaded app in 2020 and continues to dominate against established players such as Facebook, Googles.
They both launched their own versions– Reels and Shorts–on Instagram and YouTube, respectively. They too are slowly catching up with TikTok, as the latter is prohibited to operate in a few major countries including India, which by the way had more than 1.67 crore users before the government imposed the ban.
Now, Google has launched the ‘New to You’ feature on YouTube and is available on all versions– mobile, desktop, and TV.
The new tab is available on the YouTube homepage across mobile, desktop, and TV devices. The company said in a statement, “We are excited to share more details about this new feature on Youtube – a feature helping you discover new creators and fresh content, beyond the recommended videos you normally see. ‘New to you is now available on the YouTube homepage across mobile, desktop, and TV devices.”
The reason this new feature exists is that we’ve apparently been telling YouTube to show us more videos from new creators, but also because recommendation lists are only so long. Once you’ve caught up, there was nowhere else to go without searching. This new feature solves that as long as YouTube can ensure the link pops up at appropriate times.
The new feature is expected to help creators reach new audiences by targeting those who would be most interested in their content but would not have discovered it. The company further added, “Try out ‘New to you’ today, simply tap ‘New to you’ in the topic bar, which is also easily found when you refresh the YouTube homepage (on mobile). You may also see a ‘New to you’ prompt as you scroll through your feed.”

Additionally, the Google-owned application has paid over $2 billion to content creators who upload videos on the platform and recently introduced YouTube shorts for short videos.
