Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a draft notification on 28th February 2022 according to which validity of fitness certificate and registration mark of the motor vehicle shall be exhibited on the vehicles in the manner as prescribed in the draft rules.
The fitness certificate plate will be similar to the number plate of the vehicle, clearly showing the expiry date of vehicle fitness. The ministry, in the circular, stated that the fitness certificate should be in the DD-MM-YY format.

The ministry, in a statement, said in the case of heavy goods/passenger vehicles, medium goods/passenger vehicles, and light motor vehicles, the certificate has to be exhibited on the upper edge of the left side of the windscreen.

In the case of auto-rickshaws, e-rickshaws, e-carts, and quadricycles as well, the certificate shall be exhibited on the upper edge of the left side of the windscreen, if fitted.

Meanwhile, for motorcycles, it shall be displayed on a conspicuous part of the vehicle.

According to the ministry’s notification, vehicles will have to display the information in yellow color on blue background in type Arial bold script.

Further, the road transport ministry has also invited suggestions from the general public and other stakeholders in the next 30 days.

According to the government data, there are 51 lakh Light Motor Vehicles in India which are more than 20 years old and 34 lakh vehicles are more than 15 years old. Another 17 lakh Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicles older than 15 years are without valid fitness certificates.
