San Francisco: The American Over-the-top (OTT) platform Netflix has launched a new feature ”Play Something” for its Android users. Based on the service’s algorithm, a user can watch any content provided by the feature when he is unable to make a decision.
The company originally began testing the Play Something feature back in April, but it’s officially launching the feature globally on Android today. The tool — which lets Netflix choose something for you to watch — is now available on TV and Android mobile devices, but it’s not supported on iOS just yet. Netflix said that it will begin testing the shuffle function on iOS in the coming months, though.
With Play Something, users can have Netflix randomly select a movie or show to begin streaming. The service’s algorithm makes a selection based on specific titles you’ve watched, genres you’ve viewed and content saved in ‘My List.’
The Play Something button can be found on mobile devices on the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen. Meanwhile, Netflix says it will begin testing the feature on iOS some time “in the coming months.”
Netflix has also launched its Fast Laughs feature, which rolled out on iOS earlier this year, on Android mobile. Fast Laughs is a TikTok-style feature that shows clips from various comedies found on the platform.
On Android, Fast Laughs will be accessible from the bottom navigation bar with a dedicated tab. Netflix recently announced the acquisition of video game creator Night School Studio, marking the first purchase of a gaming studio for the streaming giant.
Along with the acquisition, the company has also rolled out five mobile gaming titles in select European markets. Night School Studio is best known for its debut game, Oxenfree, a supernatural teen thriller with an eerie soundtrack.
