Employees Provident Fund or EPF is a popular savings scheme that has been introduced by the EPFO under the supervision of the Government of India. The savings scheme is directed towards the salaried class to facilitate their habit of saving money to build a substantial retirement fund. However, many still don’t know how to check their EPF balance. Using these simple steps, you can always check your EPF fund balance.
Things you will need before checking your EPF balance.
- First, you need to have a computer or a smartphone and a working internet connection to check your EPF account balance online.
- You need to have your 12-digit Universal Account Number (UAN). It is there on your salary slip.

I. Using Umang app
Employees can view their PF balance on mobile phones with the help of Umang app. Umang app was launched by the government to provide access to various government services in a single place. One can view EPF Passbook, raise claim and even track Claim using the app. To get started, you need to complete a one-time registration using your phone number.
Check PF balance via EPFO website:
You can even check your Provident Fund (PF) account balance through EPFO’s official website. You have to log on to the EPFO’s official website – epfindia.gov.in. and click on the e-passbook link which is available on the top right side of the portal.
You will be redirected to the EPF passbook page – passbook.epfindia.gov.in. Log in to the account by entering username – also known as UAN or Universal Account Number, and the password. The UAN is an identification number mentioned in the monthly salary slip of every employee.
Once logged in, the details on the concerned employment have to be selected. For example, someone who has worked in three different organisations will have three different member IDs to choose from. Select the member ID. After a member ID is selected, the user can view the EPF e-passbook or EPF passbook. The passbook indicates the balance in the EPF account.
How you can check EPF balance check without UAN number:
Step 1: Log in at EPF home page of epfindia.gov.in
Step 2: Click on ‘Click Here to Know your EPF Balance”
Step 3: You will be redirected to epfoservices.in/epfo/. Go to “Member Balance Information”
Step 4: Select your state and click at your EPFO office link
Step 5: Enter your PF Account Number, name and registered mobile number
Step 6: Click on ‘Submit’ and your PF balance will be displayed.
It is worth adding that in order to check PF balance hyou need to activate the UAN. The passwrod will be sent to the mobile number. Note that subscribers can check PF balance only six hours after activating UAN.
PF Balance Check by Sending an SMS
Once the UAN is integrated with your KYC details, follow these steps:
- Send an SMS to mobile number 7738299899.
- The message is to be sent in the format ‘EPFOHO UAN ENG‘.
You’ll have to set your preferred language of communication in the SMS. Just use the first three characters of your preferred language to do so. If you wish to receive updates in English, use the first three characters of the word English, i.e. EPFOHO UAN ENG.
If you want to receive the message updates in Marathi, then type-in EPFOHO UAN MAR. This facility is available in English, Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Bengali.
PF Balance Check Through a Missed Call
You can inquire about your EPF balance by giving a missed call to the authorised phone from your registered mobile number. This service is only available upon the integration of your UAN with your KYC details. If you are unable to do this, you can take the help of your employer.
Once the UAN is integrated with your KYC details, follow the steps mentioned below:
- Give a missed call to 011-22901406 from your registered mobile number.
- After placing a missed call, you will receive an SMS providing you with your PF details.
