RTO update: Driving licence renewal: As India is battling the deadly second wave of the novel coronavirus, several states and UTs have restricted the movement of people and vehicles which has led to many people not being able to completer their driving license process or get their registration certificate (RC).

Although many states have closed their Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) for the time being, the Indian government has come to the rescue of the people who need to get their work done.

Overall, 18 RTO-related services can be availed completely online, which means that you don’t have to visit the RTO office anymore. You can use Aadhar-based authentication to avail the services online.

In March, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) had issued a notification in which it mentioned 18 license-related contactless services which can be availed via Aadhaar authentication including the renewal of the driving license. With this move, people are now not required to visit the regional transport offices (RTOs) for getting their license renewed and can do it with the help of the internet, sitting at their home.

Here is a step-by-step process on how you can avail the RTO services online.

Step 1: Visit the official website of Parivahan Sewa (link- https://parivahan.gov.in/.)

Step 2: From the homepage, click on online services and then select driving license-related services.

Step 3: You will be redirected to a new page where you have to select the name of your state.

Step 4: A new page will open based on your selection of the state. From all the options displayed, select the ‘Apply for DL Renewal’ option.

Step 5: You will get a page showing instructions for application submission. Fill in the applicant or request details next.

Step 7: Upload the required documents (if any).

Step 8: You can also be asked to upload a photo and signature. This step is applicable only in certain states.

Step 9: Make the payment of the fee and verify your payment status.

Step 10: You can now download and take a printout of the receipt for future references.

It is worth mentioning that driving license can be renewed even after the expiry, as the holder will get a grace period of up to one year and after that, the license will lapse forever. Once the grace period is over, a new driving license will be required to drive the vehicle again.
